Mohs Ostentatienne & SafariKar

Sivuvaunuveneseikkailua seurasi ensimmäinen auto: Mohs Ostentatienne Opera Sedan.

The pervy... ehh, I mean extraordinary automobile creations of Bruce Baldwin Mohs have been so well represented in the wonderland of Internet that I thought long and hard if I should include them to my blog at all. But then I decided to go for it, because I`m quite fascinated by them myself and besides their rarity, the Moss cars are infinitely weird.

In 1947 Mr. Mohs, a resident of Wisconsin, developed a vehicle named Mohs King O´ The Road Motor Scooter - the biggest scooter in the world. In the sixties he had a charter plane business, but in addition he designed light motorcycles and bicycles. A tad more unusual innovation was a motorcycle side car one could use also as a boat.

After the boaty side car adventure became the first automobile, Mohs Ostentatienne Opera Sedan. The recipe seemed quite simple: Take a frame and a V8 engine from an International Harvester, and build a new body on top. But that was where the simplicity ended, too. Mohs Ostentatienne surely was one of the weirdest-looking cars ever. It was also huge (with the 20 inch wheels and overall length of 625 centimeters), absurdly impractical and just plain insane.

There was only one door, and it was in the back of the car. There were small steps for the passengers to help them climb inside, though... B. Mohs was very keen on safety and he didn`t want his car to have conventional (and apparently unsafe) doors. Instead there were big steel beams hidden in the sides. Besides the steel beams there were velvet upholstery and walnut dashboard on the standard accessory list.

Only one Ostantienne was made (it was recently completely rebuilt). The next venture was almost as wonderfully crazy SafariKar Dual-Cowl Phaeton Metal Top Convertible, which was introduced in 1972. It was based on an International Harvester Travelall, and was supposed to be used in the politically incorrect activity of big game hunting. The SafariKar had a four wheel drive, convertible top, sliding doors (they opened straight out from the sides of the car - so yes, the doors were located in the sides this time) and plenty of room for eight passengers. The seats could be folded so they doubled as beds, and the weary big game hunters could sleep in their Kar. And what about the surface of the car? It was Naugahyde - easy to clean!

Three SafariKars were built, and two of them remain. One is in a car museum in Illinois and the other is owned By Mark Zalutko, Pennsylvania.

Neorion Chicago - kreikkalainen unelma

A Greek dream

Giannis Goulandris dreamed of a luxurious automobile with a four wheel drive, good off-roading capabilities and a thirties-influenced appearance.

Fulfilling the dream was not as difficult as one might think: Mr. Goulandris happened to be the owner of the traditional Neorion corporation, which is still active. Neorion had already produced electric cars, but Goulandris thought it would be a good time to start making a bit more conventional vehicles, too.

On the other hand, "conventional" is not the first adjective that comes to mind when describing the Chicago. The design work was carried out by a team of engineers with Georgios Michael in charge, but the end result had little in common with the original plans. The Jeep Wagoneer -sourced V8 powerplant wasn`t that easy to fit under the hood, and alterations had to be made. Everything had to be in balance with the off-road abilities wanted by Mr. Goulandris as well, and in the end the Chicago became one weird looking beast.

It made it`s debut in 1974, after only eight months of development. The steel frame was made in a ship yard owned by Neorion, and the body with sturdy steel reinforcements was made of aluminum.

It`s difficult to ponder how many customers would have been interested in buying a behemoth like this, especially at the time of the oil crisis. The question was left unanswered, because legislatory changes in Greece hit the domestic car makers very hard. The short story of Neorion Chicago ended in 1976 and only two cars were completed. One of them has found a home from a museum in Thessaloniki and the other is apparently owned by a private collector outside Greece.

The story of the Chicago may be closed by saying that Georgios Michaelis, the leader of the engineering team, had previously worked for Coggiola and Ghia and his career continued succesfully in his native Greece.
